Logan's Test Results (Phase 1) / Aedan's First Sleepover

Quick update for everyone... Got a call from the pediatrician today that Logan's stool sample was positive for trace amounts of blood. The most probable cause of this is an allergy and the most probable allergies are dairy and soy. The allergy panel will be back sometime next week with answers as far as that is concerned. In the mean time, I am avoiding dairy, soy, corn, and eggs, but am successfully eating pretty much everything else. It certainly beats turkey, rice, and potatoes, but the Olive Garden ads for all the cheesy yummy pasta right now are killing me!!!

On a more positive note, last week Aedan got to have his first sleepover (at home, lol - not quite ready for him to go elsewhere!) with a friend. Hayden stayed over and they had so much fun coloring, playing with babies, "cooking," jumping at Bouncin Bears and more!

Just as a retrospective... Here are our cutie-pies "Annie" and "HayHay" through the years. Can't wait for October when Logan's little bestie arrives!

And from their sleepover (painting with bath paints and then playing with glow straws... blowing bubbles in the water!)

My end conclusions?
1. At home, it is sooo much easier to have kids close in age that can entertain each other BUT
2. Going out gets exponentially more time consuming with each kiddo you add!
3. Aedan may be ready for sleepovers but I'm not! Not enough sleep for this mommy!!!

I'm glad we did it though - both kids had a great time and Aedan is already begging for another night with "HayHay"!

Elimination Diet Update

<p>&lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;A quick update tonight since I finally feel as though we may be making some progress... Dairy was a HUGE "no" but i have semi successfully added wheat, chicken, peanuts, and most fruit. I say semi because while we have not had another big reaction, it does seem like he is slowly getting fussier again :-(

Today we saw the pediatrician who ordered a childhood allergy panel so we will hopefully be able to see more definitively what is going on. We will get the blood drawn for that at the hospital tomorrow (his little veins were too tiny for them to do it in office).

In other little-Monkey health news, we are officially half-way through the 23 hour a day brace wear for his foot! We see the ortho on wednesday for a check up. If all is on track (as it seems to be) only 6 more weeks of constant bracing before we slowly wean off during the days! Yay!!!

I promise more "fun" posts and pics soon but wanted to post a quick update at least for now. Thanks for everyone's love, support, and help!

Elimination Diet Days #3 and #4

Yesterday was a rough day... monkey reacted to something though we are still not exactly sure what...
Breakfast: Rice cereal made with rice milk and cinnamon sugar
Lunch: Smoked Turkey from Dickey's BBQ
Dinner: Fried Potatoes
Snacks: Chips, Pear
I am betting on the rice milk since the fussiness started in the morning accompanied by yucky green diapers again (sorry...tmi!) but as I'm typing it I wonder if maybe it was a quick reaction to the turkey? Wish I had written down times!!!

Today has been much better. Happy boy eating, sleeping, and playing normally. Took a nap with Nonna while I took munchkin to the YMCA waterpark:
Strangely, I have gone from constantly starving (the past few days) to a much lesser appetite today.
Brunch: Ground Turkey and Rice
Dinner: Smoked Turkey and Baked Potato
Snacks: Chips and SWEET TEA!
Yes, I gave in... I had a LARGE glass of sweet tea. Just tea and sugar so hopefully it will all be well. This will help me sooooo much if I can just have one glass a day. 6 hours later, he is still good so I am very hopeful. I will also hope the turkey wasn't the real culprit yesterday and we don't end up with a sleepless night!

Happy 4th of July/Elimination Diet Day #2

HAPPY 4th of JULY!!!

We decided to keep things really low-key around here. We thought Matt was going to have to work (Even though he ended up on call) and between that and everything with Logan, we just weren't up for a big party this year. Instead, my parents came over for lunch and the four of us did a few fireworks ridiculous amount of pyromaniac play. Well... Logan and I watched a few fireworks before the mosquitoes and loud sounds chased us inside. Matt and Aedan played for considerably longer!

The boys enjoying play-time and decorating the cookies Nonna brought (which I couldn't eat :-():

Fireworks and Glow Sticks:
Aedan says "Ladies and Gentlemen, the moment we've all been waiting for... It's Fireworks time!" - so cute!!!!

ELIMINATION DIET DAY #2:

Definitely craving DESSERT today. Baked pears just don't really do it for me :-( Otherwise, though, things are good. Logan only had a couple of fussy periods today, diapers seem more normal, and generally this is already seeming to be worth the hassle.

Today I ate...

Breakfast: another baked potato. I'm going to try the rice cereal eventually, but this sounded yummy.
Lunch: Turkey burger (well...the meat anyway...) and chips. It was decent but nothing special.
Dinner: Fried Turkey Nuggets... YUM!!!! Super easy - I just dipped chunks of turkey breast cutlet (still don't know how that differs from tenderloin by the way...) into rice milk then tossed in rice flour and fried in canola oil. They were delicious!

Snacks: rice pasta with olive oil and rosemary (since the turkey I bought contains a small amount of rosemary anyway, I thought I might as well enjoy it as a seasoning, too!), rice cakes, chips

I am definitely beginning to realize that this could be a looong two weeks. I really, REALLY just want a cookie.... or even just a lick of icing... but a happier baby and more turkey nuggets might make things better :-)

Elimination Diet: Day #1

As I mentioned previously, our poor little monkey has really had a rough first couple of months. Between the casts, surgery, and now brace for his foot and what we have been assuming is colic, he is just rarely very happy (though when he is, he is super giving of his smiles and love!). Yesterday, we hit a really low point. After the general fussiness (and all out screaming) had been escalating for weeks, yesterday I realized that over the past week I was getting maybe an hour a day when Logan was awake and happy. Then, last night, Logan and I were both up for all but about 4 hours (this was rare - usually he sleeps fairly decently) with him squirming, crying, and obviously uncomfortable. Obviously this affects all of us. I don't get anything done around the house or for work, Aedan doesn't get the attention from me he deserves, Matt barely sees Logan smile, and poor Logan is just miserable.

So - in the wee hours of the morning, we decided to go drastic. We are now on a total elimination diet to determine if some of little monkey's discomfort might be caused by food allergies or sensitivities (which between symptoms and family history seems likely...) For those of you who don't know (and really - I hope you never have to!), the principle behind a TED is that by eliminating all but the least allergenic foods in each food group, you can 1. Get baby (or you!) to a baseline of comfort and then 2. Identify what food(s) are the allergen culprit(s) as you slowly add things back to your diet one at a time.

The first two weeks are pretty rough. Until Logan reaches his "baseline" (which will hopefully be a much happier, healthier little boy!), I am eating the Dr. Sears recommended elimination diet of rice, potatoes, squash, pears, and turkey with sea salt, black pepper, and (my additions after online research) sugar, cinnamon, and canola oil. That's it. On one hand, it is a CRAZY proposition that involves a lot of label reading (for instance, did you know that a Butterball turkey roast has corn starch in it?) and some creative thinking about food. One the other, though, I was amazed at how many products I was actually able to buy on my grocery trip today. Here's my stash:

RICE:
Brown and white minute rice, rice flour, rice cereal, rice couscous, rice cakes, and gluten free rice krispies.

POTATOES:

This is what made me believe this was a do-able diet plan... I love potatoes. Yum.

SQUASH... self explanatory. Yellow and zucchini.

PEARS:
Canned (check the label for additives!), fresh, and baby...

TURKEY:
(Ground, turkey burgers, organic no-filler lunch meat, breast tenderloins, and breast cutlets... and if anyone can explain the difference between a breast tenderloin and a breast cutlet, I would love to know!)

DRINKS:
(rice milk and baby pear juice (to be dilluted)

Today I ate a baked potato with sea salt for breakfast (the only thing I already had in the house that fit the diet!).

For lunch, I browned all of the ground turkey (seasoned with sea salt and pepper) and cooked almost an entire small box (3 cups dry) of Minute Rice. I poured the ground turkey (and drippings) into the finished rice and mixed. Seasoned with a bit more sea salt and pepper, this was actually really good. I ate a plate full and put the rest in a tupperware container in the fridge. Not wanting to cook tonight, I ate some more for dinner.

So far for snacks, I have just done a little munching on the potato chips...yummy. For dessert tonight, though, I put half a can of pears into a bowl with some cinnamon and sugar and popped it into the microwave. The result was not as yummy as a true baked pear or apple (especially since no butter could be used :-() but it was actually very good and satisfied my dessert craving way better than expected.

Today was a MUCH better day than yesterday. Logan is sleeping now and I am hoping for a much better night as well... We will keep you posted!
